who together have won 35 Grammys and sold over 350 million records.
The band has worked on 12 joint albums and produced numerous live DVDs and Blu-rays.
They have performed for audiences all over the world, from New York to Shanghai, from São Paulo to Miami,
and in major European cities like London and Paris. Leslie Mandoki’s pivotal role in the band’s success has earned him the title:
“The one who plays with the legends!”
“Tony Carey, hello, it’s great to see you here today.” “How are you?”
“Hello Susanne, I’m doing well.”
“We’re here today at the beautiful Residence and are about one hour away from the world premiere with Mandoki Soulmates.
There are 17 of us on stage, it’s a huge undertaking and a logistical nightmare (smiles).
But by the end of the night, it will all be worth it.”
“Tony, how long have you been a musician, and why did you become one?”
“I didn’t become a musician. I was born a musician and have been making music since I was five years old. I’m now 71.”
“Wow, that’s a really long time.”
“What instrument do you enjoy playing the most?”
“On the hit records people know me for, I play everything. As a teenager in the school orchestra, I learned double bass.
I play all the usual Rock ’n’ Roll instruments, but I’m probably best known as a keyboardist. Today with the Soulmates,
I’m playing Hammond organ and singing, depending on the situation.”
“I’m so happy to see you today, and for the world premiere of the new album. This is something really special for me;
it’s incredibly beautiful.”
“Are you often in Munich?”
“I’m not in Munich as often as I’d like to be. I have two grown daughters living here in Munich,
so I usually come to visit my grandchildren. I come about 5 or 6 times a year, definitely.”
“If someone asked you to describe yourself, how would you characterize yourself?”
“Calm, calm.”
“I actually can’t imagine that… there’s a fire burning inside you.”
“You need balance. Music can sometimes be hectic, with this and that. But personally, I appreciate silence, books,
and I’m a country boy at heart.”
“What hobbies do you have?”
“Well, I read, and when I was younger, I used to go deep-sea fishing.” “I fished for marlin species.”
“There are six different types; they have a very long snout and a broad, large dorsal fin.”
“I used to fish for them from 1,200 pounds down to 25 pounds. I’ve caught all six species, and deep-sea fishing
was my hobby when I was much younger.”
“Hobbies: I go into the garden and play with my grandchildren. I’m an old man, an old man.”
“What inspires you when you write your songs, or who inspires you?”
“I have no idea: If I could explain it, I’d bottle it up and sell it for a million dollars a bottle.” “I have no idea.”
“The ideas come from somewhere, and yes…”
“How would you describe your musical style?”
“That’s also difficult. I started with Rainbow, which is one of the hardest rock bands of the ’70s—that was 50 years ago.
And I’ve celebrated my biggest hits in Germany with pop, and my biggest hits in America with rock,
rock-pop, hard rock, and jazz. The only genre I’m not really at home in is hip-hop; I haven’t really engaged with that.”
“What was your most emotional experience in your life?”
“Here I’ll give you a cliché: the birth of my first child. That was very, very moving for me.”
“How long ago was that?”
“50 years, that’s a long time ago.”
“What are your short-term goals?”
“Man, I don’t even buy green tomatoes; I don’t have any, or green bananas. You know what I mean.”
“My goals are always short-term. Just enjoy today, wake up tomorrow, and hopefully just be there.”
“In our family circle, everything goes smoothly, easy, everyone is healthy, and my wish is to keep it as light and bright as possible.”
“Do you have a good tip for our viewers and listeners? A good tip for life, for the heart.”
“I’m going back to the clichés, because these clichés are true: ‘Try to be your best in the here and now; you can’t influence yesterday,
and tomorrow is a question mark.’
‘Be here, be now. Stay in the here and now, try to enjoy what you have, because here in Europe, in America, or Scandinavia,
we are blessed; we are rich, richer than one might think. There are places where it’s absolutely not like that.
Cherish what you have; life is hard, and you can get depressed. It comes in highs and lows—highs and lows—but be grateful
for what you have and that it is the way it is.”
“I have to agree with you on that.”
“You know, I really enjoyed this.”
“Thank you, Susanne.”
Tony Carey: “I wish you a fantastic evening and a wonderful performance! All the best!”
“Thank you!”
“You’re welcome, you’re welcome.”
The album is receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback worldwide, and Mandoki sees his work validated:
“Especially when there is such a resounding echo in the motherland of prog rock, in England and America,
it is the greatest gratitude to the artist’s soul that one can imagine.”
“We need more courage for utopia!” “Courage is calling for people like us!”
“Stay Loud for a future in freedom and peace! ”
“Stand up against division, fake news, and hatred—for truthfulness, intergenerational justice, and humanity!”
“Music Is The Greatest Unifier!“,” says Mandoki, promising “a magical and unforgettable musical summer night.”
Mandoki Soulmates have far exceeded this promise. It was an unforgettable evening with world stars who played with passion,
dedication, love, and indescribable emotion, winning all hearts. The world premiere of their new album Memory Of Our Future
could not have been better.
“I highly recommend Mandoki Soulmates to all of you.”
Warmest regards, Susanne Panhans
