Exclusive Interview with Richard Jacques – Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy“
“Hello and good evening, nice to meet you.”
„Good evening and lovely to meet you too.“
“Thank you very much for taking time for this interview.”
„You’re very Welcome.“
„Oh please tell me, how was the world premiere for you tonight in Nuremberg?“
„It was amazing to be here, the Orchestra, is such an amazing Orchestra and to have my music played by them and
as you have said – the World premiere of my music from Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” – an unbelievably good
amazing feeling.“
“I have been there for the completely time and it was out of the world, it was so great – congratulations!”
„Thank you so. Much!“
„How long has it taken you to compose this music for that game?“
„There is a lot of music in the game. Nearly 6 hours of orchestra music, one hour of license music tracks,
and one hour of original rock music tracks. I composed the score – it took me probably about two years –
so quite a long time, because of the amount of music.“
„And how does it work, do you see the game before and then you sit – down and start composing, or are ideas
coming to you while you’re watching or do the ideas come after watching?“
„At the beginning of the process, all I have, I may have a script for the actors and may I have some artwork,
black and white pencil artwork. So I look at the artwork and the script and I imagine in my head, how is this playing
in the game and about the characters. But as the game gets more developed, there will be some gameplay that I can
watch, but usually I start with very very basic script and art.“
„And do you turn in parts of the music and then they say we like it or do they say – should we take it to a curtain part
of the scene, or rather more to a kind of an action scene, or?“
„Well, every piece I write is for a specific scene, so I write to an action scene – I write specifically for the action scene
and more emotional scene, so all the music fits into a specific place. So I just look at the scene and than I’ll compose it and
it goes into the game.“
„Wow, wow!“ „How many Composing’s have you created – for how many games, do you know?“
„It is over 200 or 250, I have been composing in my career for over 30 years. I have composed for many many games.”
„For many different consoles, pc, and mobile and lot’s of different franchises and video game characters, so maybe 250 to
300
games. Something like that, a lot of games.“
“How did this all start, what was the start and what made the ball rolling into this direction, how did that happen?
„I was studien classical music, I play trombone, piano and picassion, and during my studies – I was playing video games and
I was playing Video games since I was 11 years old, so I was always interested in games. But I didn’t know that you could have a currier.“
„I thought back when I started, I thought everything was made in Japan or something. And then I actually finished my music studies
and started working at Sega, a Japanese Games Company. I was working on franchises like Sony, the head shop, Daytona,
and a lot of Sega Games.“
„I was a full time composer for nearly 8 Years and than I composed my first Orchestra Soundtrack in 2001 a game called „Headhunter“
and then I started working for a lot of games companies.“
“Wow, this is so exciting. Oh my goodness.”
„I am very lucky and I am very passionate about it.“
“I believe that is seeable, reelable, hearable, this is like the complete package. This is phenomenal!”
“You come from England right?”
„Yes, I was born and raced in England and I live in London, but I come to Germany for concerts and for conferences in many
parts of Germany so I have a lot of German friends and I know some of the Orchestra and the musicians.“
“That’s nice.”
„Yes very nice, I always enjoy coming to Germany, I always have a very nice time.“
“What do you like the best about Germany?”
„I really like the culture and the people. It’s very friendly, relaxing, and has a lot of history, I like the German beer of course
and the food. There are so many things to explore. I love everything about it and the people are so friendly.”
“My German is terrible, so I feel bad, I need to learn more, everyone is so friendly.“
“That comes in by speaking it, then you’ll hear it and you get the sound into your system and you speak it.”
„I practice before I come back to Germany next time.“
„Oh this is so nice.“
„And what is your next destination after Nuremberg?“
“So I return back to London tomorrow where I live and I will be doing some more work, everything I am making
right now is a little bit Secret. And then next year, I have a couple of trips to Canada and the United States.”
So when I can announce my next project, maybe next year.”
“Nice! So at the moment you are composing a new project? And is it a huge project?“
„It is quite big, yes. It is for a quiet big franchise, you will have heard of, but the games industry is very secretive so my lips are sealed“
„We will be very happy to hear and to see more of your work and I really would love to see you again, it is a very big pleasure
for me.“
„Thank you very much and it is a very big pleasure for me.“ „And I will be very happy again and to have another conversation,
absolutely.“
“Thank you so much.”
„Thank you, thank you very much.“
“You’re Welcome anytime.”
