Alexander Höller "THE EMOTION ARTIST"

I met Alex in Frankfurt at the Jahrhunderthalle. There, he showcased a small collection of his artworks and additionally presented some pieces from his clothing collection, which he also designed himself.

Alex is an extraordinary individual who has wholeheartedly dedicated himself to his art, quite literally.

Seven years ago, Alex moved to Munich. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg and successfully passed the entrance examination with flying colors, a feat achieved by only 2 out of 100 students.

Alex has an extraordinary hobby – he enjoys crafting things like finger skateboards, which are a mere 12 cm in size, along with corresponding finger skateparks. At that time, he packed everything he had created onto a cart and arrived at the academy, fully equipped with this cart, to apply for the Academy of Fine Arts. Earning his own money was always important to Alex.

In Munich, there are only around 1000 courses of study, and there was the option of “Freie Malerei” (Free Painting) or “Künstler Lehrer” (Artist Teacher). However, since Alex lacked pedagogical training, he opted for the “risky option.”

Alex has already showcased his art in numerous exhibitions at renowned museums like the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Aspen, LA, Miami, Vienna, Malaga, Marseille, South Korea, Toronto, Germany, and many more. The breakthrough came in 2020/2021.

“Art is very consuming,”

Alex reveals to me. When he works in the studio for months, he becomes quite exhausted. It takes a lot of energy when he’s in the creative phase, completely isolated from the world, so he can fully immerse himself in his work. Sometimes, Alex even spends the night in the studio. His creative phase typically starts around 10:00 PM and ends around 06:00 AM in the morning. “The creative phase is very action-packed,” Alex tells me.

“How did it start for you? How did you discover the artist’s soul within you?” I asked Alex.

“It developed over time.” “I used to play soccer and was a loner.” “I was interested in graffiti and would lose track of time.” “I felt comfortable in the role of the crazy artist and was in the right place at the right time.” And so, Alex was drawn into the world of art. “However, the response, the praise, takes much longer to materialize.”

“I am Art!” The artist followed his intuition and felt at home with his work. He works on 10-15 paintings simultaneously and still manages to go to the gym twice a week. Alex had “Art is my passion” tattooed on his chest when he was 16. “Until a painting is finished, being an artist is both a curse and a blessing.” For example, the painting “Silent Scream” was created in reference to Edward Munch’s work – “The Conspiracy of Two Middle Fingers!”

The artwork “Forest” is particularly close to Alex’s heart; having grown up near the woods, trees have always fascinated him. Notably, the interconnection of roots in the forest floor and what arises from them. Alex often rises before dawn to photograph the treetops in the morning light. This is always a poignant moment that inspires him to draw, beckoning him to linger, and then he translates it into his artworks.

Alexander himself is a work of art, and an impressive tattoo of Johnny Depp adorns his forearm.

In his free time, Alex prefers to spend time at home with his wife. He has been married for a year and is a man of radical decisions. “No messing around, just do it,” is Alexander Höller’s motto. They both come from Schweinfurt, and 7 years ago when Alex painted “Neurons,” he wanted to dye his hair rainbow colors. So, he went to the hairdresser, and after 3 years, they had their first date. He enjoys traveling, is curious about other cultures, loves to laugh, and plays the drums. He watches the Champions League from the round of 16 onwards and enjoys playing football on the beach while on vacation.

Artist Residence in Aspen: In the summer, Alex likes to spend 4 weeks in an “Artist Residence” somewhere on a beach in another country. His favorite dishes are Thai curries and rosé wine. His dad is also a good cook. Alex is a vegetarian because the suffering of animals deeply affected him. “Eating meat as a child is okay, but as an adult, it’s not necessary.” As a pacifist, Alex always ensures there’s no trouble; he prefers harmony and lives peacefully. His favorite outfits are created by Prada and Dolce & Gabbana.

Alex is truly in his element, very likable, and loves his wife and his life.
