Planetarium Nürnberg: “100 Years Eternity” Happy Birthday 2024

On May 7, 2024, the Nicolaus Copernicus Planetarium in Nuremberg presented the anniversary show “100 Years of Eternity.”

With a captivating lecture, Jürgen Sadurski transported the audience to another dimension for a short while.
He spoke about the history of the planetarium, its development, and how planetariums came to be built.
In a very charming manner and with a Franconian storytelling voice, he entertained the audience, who were visibly
and audibly very enthusiastic. Many visitors repeatedly attend various events at the planetarium.

The famous Zeiss projector has been a permanent feature of the Nicolaus Copernicus Planetarium in Nuremberg since 1977.

Planetariums were invented between 1923 and 1925. Together, planetariums worldwide are celebrating their 100th anniversary
from October 2023 to May 2025.

The first planetarium opened its doors on May 7, 1925, in Munich.

With 360-degree footage and intense animations, the audience embarks on a cultural-historical journey in the fulldome show “
100 Years of Eternity” by Tobias Wiethoff. In Jena, these paths converge in a space whose dimensions seemed immeasurable.

With its 18-meter dome diameter, 200 seats, and over 70,000 annual visitors, it is the largest planetarium in Bavaria.
The fulldome projection system is among the most modern facilities of its kind in Germany. The five-meter-high Zeiss
planetarium projector in the center of the air-conditioned hall can project a realistic starry sky with the sun, moon, planets,
and stars onto the dome. Live presentations and planetarium shows transport both young and old into the fascinating
world of stars and galaxies.

After a construction process that spanned decades and even a world war, a group of craftsmen and engineers gazed
into the deep black void of the starry firmament, where the brilliance of eternity seemed to be reflected. The projection
planetarium was born.

Hundreds of people crowded onto the roof of the Zeiss factory in Jena to attend the first public
presentations of this invention.  It was felt like experiencing a miracle. The idea spread around
the world, leading to the construction of planetariums in many parts of the globe within a few years.
The fascination and experience remain unbroken to this day.

Nicolaus Copernicus

Nicolaus Copernicus was the son of Niklas Koppernigk, a wealthy copper merchant and councilor in Thorn.
Initially, Nicolaus was educated at St. John’s School in Thorn. From 1488 to 1491, he attended a higher school.
From 1491 to 1494, Copernicus, along with his brother Andreas, attended the University of Krakow, where he studied
the seven liberal arts. On May 31, 1503, Copernicus received his doctorate in canon law (Doctor iuris canonici)
from the University of Ferrara. Copernicus was an observational astronomer.

His most significant discovery is undoubtedly the heliocentric model of the universe, which posits that the sun,
not the earth, is at the center of our solar system. According to this model, the planets, including
Earth, orbit the sun.Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) revolutionized our worldview. In his work
“De revolutionibus orbium coelestium,” he wrote that the Earth is not the center of the universe but orbits
the sun. This is the foundation of modern astronomy.
