55,000 spectators were treated to a full evening of “Romeo and Juliet” by the Nuremberg State Philharmonic Orchestra,
conducted by Roland Böer.
At the two major free concerts in the heart of Nuremberg, around 55,000 visitors per evening enjoyed the music.
At the Classical Open Air, the Nuremberg State Philharmonic performed on one weekend,
and the Symphony Orchestra on the other.
In 2024, the Philharmonic kicked off on Sunday, July 21, with two concerts. The family concert, themed “Great Emotions,”
took place at 11 a.m. for both young and old, led by Philipp Roosz, the moderator of the children’s concerts at the State Theater.
The main concert followed at 8 p.m. with the new conductor Roland Böer.
In the evening, moderator Tobias Föhrenbach hosted the main concert. The theme for 2024 is “Romeo and Juliet.”
“Romeo and Juliet” was the theme of the evening, showcasing both well-known and lesser-known works about Shakespeare’s lovers,
including pieces by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergei Prokofiev, and Leonard Bernstein.

The event was hosted by moderator Tobias Föhrenbach from Bayerischer Rundfunk.
Conductor Roland Böer
General Music Director of the Nuremberg State Theater and Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg State Philharmonic
since the 2023 season.
He has performed as a guest conductor at leading international opera houses such as Teatro
alla Scala, the Royal Opera House, English National Opera London, as well as Deutsche Oper and Komische Oper Berlin,
among many others.
As a concert conductor, he has led renowned orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra,
the hr-Sinfonieorchester, and the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie. He served as Kapellmeister at the Frankfurt Opera for
six years. From 2009, he directed the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte di Montepulciano festival for over twelve years and
was principal guest conductor at the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg until 2019.
Recordings have been made with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony, and several others.
Roland Böer was honored with the Congregation Award RNCM Fellow by the Royal Northern College of Music
in Manchester and is an honorary citizen of Montepulciano.
The State Philharmonic Orchestra is the largest musical ensemble in the metropolitan region and the second-largest opera
and concert orchestra in Bavaria. Since the 2023/24 season, Roland Böer has served as the orchestra’s conductor and
General Music Director.
His predecessors include Marcus Bosch and Joana Mallwitz. The orchestra presents around 150 opera and ballet
performances annually, along with its own concert series at the Meistersinger Hall.
These concert series are complemented by special projects, New Year’s concerts, and the “Dreiklang” series.
The State Philharmonic performed its first Classical Open Air concert in 1999 in cooperation with the City of Nuremberg,
in Europe’s greenest and largest concert venue.
The orchestra’s history dates back to 1377, with its official founding in 1922 as the Nuremberg Philharmonic.
The orchestra was renamed the “Nuremberg State Philharmonic” in 2012, and an orchestra academy was established.
In 2022, to celebrate the 100th anniversary, the State Theater founded the “Young State Philharmonic”
under the initiative of Joana Mallwitz.
