for the school meals. School’s own herb and vegetable garden for the children.
Here, the school’s own vegetable and herb garden is cultivated and maintained by the students themselves.
With expert guidance and the assistance of teachers, students learn with great enthusiasm in their own garden
how to grow, care for, harvest, and process healthy foods. Responsible food handling, sustainability, and cooking
are taught early on.
On May 3rd, 2024, the project “SCHOOLFOODFORCHANGE” was inaugurated at the Schlößleinsgasse 8 Middle School in Nuremberg
by the project manager Christian Sander, patron Marlene Mortler, Cornelia Trinkl – School and Sports Officer, Principal Doris Oechler
, and Vice Principal Britta Scheffer.
The event was opened by project leader Christian Sander, with patronage from Marlene Mortler, Cornelia Trinkl – Consultant for Schools
and Sports, school principal Doris Oechler, and vice-principal Britta Scheffer at Schlößleinsgasse 8 Middle School in Nuremberg.
The event was originally planned to be held outdoors but had to be moved to the gymnasium due to the weather.
Ms. Marlene Mortler, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), serves as a direct link between the city
of Nuremberg and the EU. As the patron of this outstanding project, which concerns us all, MEP
Marlene Mortler is a strong advocate.
Also in attendance were Ms. Merkel, Head of the Office for General Education Schools; Mr. Sandner; Ms. Schielein;
Ms. Krapf-Schoolfoodforchange; the principals of participating schools, including Mr. Djawadi, Ms. Hannemann, and Ms. Oechler;
as well as the following teachers from the schools: Ms. Hühnlein, Ms. Abdallah, Ms. Scheffer, Ms. Dobe-Richter,
and Ms. Hoffmann from Panino Catering.
As part of this project, canteen cooks are being trained according to the recommendation of the EAT-Lancet
Commission’s “Planetary Health Diet” by the University of Gastronomy Science in Italy.
Representatives from the city of Nuremberg and educational and school policy spokespersons from various political parties,
including Ms. Bälz from the CSU, Ms. Klaßen from the Greens, Mr. Sormaz from the FDP, and Mr. Meissner from the SPD,
were warmly welcomed. All guests were delighted to hear about the significant progress of the project.
Since its inception in 2022 across 12 different EU countries and 16 cities, the project has already borne significant fruit.
Schools are places where young people learn for life.
Nutrition plays a significant role in our lives. Health is the most important aspect, followed by sustainability and responsibility
for our environment.
Excursions and stays for students on the farm to show how animals grow,
how agriculture works, and that food is much more than just “something to eat,” understanding connections and
to impart a sensitivity to the environment, the importance of sustainability, and above all, one’s own health permanently.
Health is everything, and without health, nothing works. Our planet also needs health, and we are all responsible for that.
Homegrown vegetables save long delivery routes, harvesting and processing, knowing when each fruit ripens and when which vegetables
grow. What does the student eat when they still have classes and preferably don’t fall into a “food coma,”
so they can still study and concentrate after visiting the cafeteria. Cooking good food is a beautiful commonality,
medicine, and tasty prophylaxis for health, well-being, and beauty, that comes from within. Healthy eating not only
promotes health, performance, and good mood, cooking together promotes social contacts, cooking transcends
all national borders and speaks the language of all cultures.
Students learn to take responsibility for themselves and that cooking doesn’t have to be difficult or exhausting.
Cooking can be well prepared and easily integrated into everyday life with targeted planning. In addition,
the focus is on educating and empowering children and adolescents so that those who are susceptible
to nutrition-related problems receive help for self-help and on the other hand, are also the “big ones”
and look after and help the “smaller ones” to incorporate things into daily life together.
The guests are invited to the school garden, where Tanya, Lara, and Tom divide them into 3 groups
and tell them all about the school garden. Many questions are asked, and the guests visibly enjoy
the tour of the school garden and the event.
Tanya, Lara, and Tom do a great job, explaining everything in detail and leaving no questions unanswered.
Tanya’s favorite thing is planting herbs; she enjoys cooking, and herb spaghetti with salad are always a hit 🙂
Favorite drink: Strawberry cocktail with mint. Without alcohol – of course. 🙂
Tom has a special: The research station, which is currently under construction. The research station urgently
needs a few more magnifying glasses. Magnifying glasses (hand lenses) are used to view small things well
and to replace a microscope. The things that can be enlarged and examined more closely in such a magnifying
glass do not run away and can be released back into freedom afterwards.
Tom loves spaghetti with tomato sauce, and he makes the spaghetti himself. The tomato sauce is cooked by
a friend who does it particularly well. 🙂
Lara explains how the walls were designed with graffiti. An artist designed and worked out the stencils together
with the students. She likes everything related to art, like being a makeup artist, drawing, and cooking.
She enjoys making lasagna and pasta from scratch.
How beautiful it can look and how delicious healthy food can taste was impressively demonstrated
with the lovingly prepared dishes that the visitors were able to enjoy. Delicacies such as barley salad with
asparagus, baked chickpeas, oat cakes with apple ketchup, lentil salad with smoked tofu.
The favorite projects of the teachers are collaborations with other teachers and partners, children’s centers, vocational schools,
excursions to the farm. Experiencing food, where it comes from: fair trade, organic, environmental stations & energy.
For example, Ms. Everding has inquired about interest in BNE – Education for Sustainable Development for the school garden.
The main focus is on “raising awareness for healthy eating.” Drawing attention to it and working on it, so that students develop
an understanding for it with joy, which will last a lifetime.
How much things from childhood are still present in us is told by Ms. Theresa Hühnlein from the Municipal Business School:
“Grandma’s mashed potatoes, they were the best.” She still loves these mashed potatoes today and still makes them
according to Grandma’s recipe.” Classes 7 – 11 take their enthusiasm home with them.
43 European partners of the “SCHOOLFOODFORCHANGE” project rely on the parents of 3,000 schools,
that this great awareness of them as multipliers can be integrated into a sustainable systemic change in society.
The city of Nuremberg has already done a lot, and it has many different family models. Things that are important
and cannot be taken over by parents are complemented here with a lot of heart and dedication by the teachers,
and they also need your support.
For example, there are still schools whose cafeteria is too small and the children cannot all sit at tables to eat.
The result: children don’t go to the cafeteria to eat, and that’s a shame. Here, a bit of building material and diligent
craftsmen would be needed to create space to seat the children at tables for eating.
A few things are still needed, and the schools would be very grateful for:
The school kitchen is delighted with the equipment – everything used in the kitchen, ironing board, laundry rack, etc.
Donations from EBL, BECK, and vegetable vendors would be great, then a free breakfast for the children could take
place once a week.
A big thank you at this point for the generous donations of fruits that can be distributed at the school every week.
Gardening tools (rake, etc.), plants for spring, everything needed for gardening – and a few helping hands are also
very welcome.
